What's in this series?
The Yard as a Wentworth adaptation
Avlu is described in Fremantle’s distribution announcement as the Turkish adaptation of Wentworth. The series retains the central dramatic setting of a women’s prison while rebuilding the story around a prison in Istanbul and the Turkish television context. The sources reviewed do not provide a comprehensive official episode-by-episode comparison of all character and plot changes.
From Turkey to global distribution
The Yard was produced by Limon Film with Hayri Aslan as producer and was made available to international audiences by Netflix under the title The Yard following a distribution agreement with Fremantle. Netflix classifies it as a Turkish crime and social-issue drama.
Violence and audience response
A March 2018 report by Turkey’s Radio and Television Supreme Council listed Avlu among programs that received substantial viewer complaints concerning detailed portrayals of violence against women and a particularly severe scene. The report documents a point of controversy in the series’ reception but does not make a general judgment about its artistic quality.
Power and solidarity in prison
The series places Deniz’s attempt to survive and reunite with her family within the prison power struggle between Azra and Kudret. This structure foregrounds solidarity among inmates, threats, and the conflict between official prison authority and informal power centers.
