Plot
Ada, Sevgi and Leyla have been close friends since university. Their lives change after Sevgi is diagnosed with cancer and chooses to seek an alternative treatment in Ayvalık rather than immediately entering hospital care. The journey introduces them to Zaman, whose family-origin sessions bring buried losses, secrets and unresolved emotions to the surface. As the friends confront their family histories, Ada reassesses her marriage to Selim and her unfinished relationship with Toprak; Leyla faces the crisis in her marriage to Erdem; and Sevgi reconsiders her relationship with her mother, Mukadder. The series frames the past as something that cannot be changed but can be faced differently.

What's in this series?
Creative and production context
Another Self was created and written by Nuran Evren Şit and produced by OGM Pictures for Netflix. Its first season was announced for release on July 28, 2022. Ayvalık and family-origin sessions connect the three friends’ personal stories.
Family-origin work and intergenerational trauma
The series uses family-origin sessions as a dramatic device through which the characters connect with losses, secrets and trauma from earlier generations. Academic analysis identifies intergenerational trauma, broken communication and reconnection as major themes, while also noting that the method portrayed is scientifically contested.
The function of the olive-tree title
Creator Nuran Evren Şit has described the olive-tree image as a symbol connected to the characters and said that its final metaphor forms the core of the story. The title therefore refers not only to Ayvalık but also to roots, family bonds and the past reaching into the future.
Academic and critical approach
Academic studies describe the series as placing family-origin work at the centre of its dramatic structure and linking it to personal healing and identity construction. They also note that the scientific controversy surrounding the method is not questioned sufficiently within the series.
