Plot

The Kocabaş family moves from Antakya to Cihangir and lives under the authority of Şehmuz Bey, the family’s traditional and domineering father. The household includes Şehmuz, his wife Servet, their daughter Gülistan, her husband Selahattin, their grandson Orçun, and their unmarried son Rıza. Although Selahattin is married to Gülistan, he is involved with Tülay, whom he met at a nightclub. Rıza, engaged to Nurhayat because of family pressure, decides that he no longer wants to continue the relationship. At the same time, Deniz arrives in Istanbul from İzmir for a guest role in a television series. When the lead actress leaves the set, Deniz unexpectedly becomes the lead. While searching for a home with her brother Bora and fellow actress Açılay, Deniz becomes a rival tenant for an apartment that Şehmuz wants to rent out. Selahattin wants the apartment for Tülay, while Deniz and Açılay try to secure it for themselves. The housing dispute, Rıza’s growing feelings for Deniz, and the family’s secrets turn the apartment into a constant source of comic conflict.

Origins of the story

Adaptation status

No reliable source examined confirms that the series is adapted from a novel, story, book, film, series, play, memoir, or historical work. Gülse Birsel described Cihangir and her own experience there as part of the creative starting point, which is not an adaptation claim.

Connection to reality

Yalan Dünya is not presented as an adaptation of real events or the lives of real people. It is a fictional comedy set in Cihangir and the television industry, using encounters between different classes and lifestyles in Istanbul as social context.

Inspirations and influences

Cihangir

Confirmed by a creator or official source

According to Gülse Birsel, Cihangir was chosen as the setting because she had lived there for four or five years and transferred her woman-man story to that environment.

Confirmed by creator

Limit of the evidence: This identifies a creative starting point for the setting, not real-life models for the characters.

What's in this series?

Adaptation status

No official source examined confirms that Yalan Dünya is adapted from another work. Gülse Birsel described the series as emerging from her experiences in Cihangir and from a woman-man story she had in mind. There is therefore insufficient evidence to classify it as an adaptation.

Cihangir, apartments, and shared life

The Cihangir apartment is a fictional shared space where families and lifestyles meet. Critical commentary identifies the series’ comic structure as being built around different social groups encountering one another in the same apartment or residential setting.

Class and rural-urban tension

The series contrasts the Kocabaş family’s move from Antakya to Cihangir with the more urban lifestyle of the television circle. Academic and critical sources interpret this encounter through class mobility, the rural newcomer’s claim to urban spaces, and conflicting cultural codes.

Production and ensemble structure

Written by Gülse Birsel and broadcast on Kanal D, Yalan Dünya follows both the Kocabaş family and Deniz’s entry into television. Contemporary interviews emphasized its ensemble comedy structure, in which different characters could function as the audience’s point of focus.
