What's in this series?

From Shtisel to Ömer: cultural adaptation

Ömer relocates Shtisel’s conflict between family, religious community and individual choice into a Turkish context. The Haredi Jewish neighborhood is replaced by a setting shaped by a mosque and an imam’s family. Academic comparisons also identify differences in technology, attitudes toward the outside world, gender narratives and the public-political representation of religion.

Faith, family and neighborhood pressure

The series centers on individual choices confronting family and neighborhood norms. Ömer’s relationship with Gamze makes visible prejudice related to age, marital status and the social judgment directed at a widow with a child. These themes have been examined in academic studies of exclusion and stigmatization.

Production context and creative team

The series was produced by OGM Pictures, broadcast by Star TV and directed by Cem Karcı. Its screenplay was written by Gülizar Irmak. The leading cast includes Selahattin Paşalı, Gökçe Bahadır, Barış Falay and Merve Dizdar.

Broadcast run and ending

Ömer ended with its 54th episode on May 6, 2024. Star TV’s finale announcement highlighted a mass wedding ceremony. The series has also been examined academically in relation to religious representation, gender and cultural differences in adaptation.
