Plot

Suskunlar follows Ecevit, Bilal, İbrahim and Zeki, four friends who grow up like brothers in Istanbul’s Kuyudibi district. After an innocent mistake sends them to prison, they experience severe violence and sexual abuse. Once released, they promise never to see one another again and to remain silent about what happened. Years later, Zeki’s death brings Ecevit, Bilal and İbrahim back together. Joined by Ahu, they set out to confront the people connected to their childhood trauma and seek revenge.

Origins of the story

Adaptation status

The series is associated with Lorenzo Carcaterra’s novel Sleepers, published in Turkish as Kardeş Gibiydiler. The Istanbul setting, Kuyudibi community and local characters distinguish the television adaptation from the novel’s New York setting.

Connection to reality

Press reports and an academic study have connected the series’ themes to a 1997 case in Gaziantep involving children imprisoned for allegedly stealing baklava. The available sources do not establish that the series portrays those real individuals directly.

What's in this series?

From the novel to Istanbul

The series retains the central premise of four children whose institutional trauma becomes an adult quest for revenge, while relocating the story from New York and Wilkinson Home for Boys to Istanbul’s Kuyudibi district and a Turkish prison context.

The connection to the 1997 Gaziantep case

Press reports and academic analysis have associated the series’ imprisonment and abuse themes with a 1997 Gaziantep case involving children accused of stealing baklava. This does not prove that the characters are direct portraits of real people.

Production and international circulation

Produced by TIMS Productions, the series premiered on Show TV on March 1, 2012. The producer’s catalogue lists two seasons and 28 episodes. Global Agency presents Game of Silence as the international title.

Silence, trauma and revenge

The series explores how childhood violence shapes adult choices. The friends’ oath of silence is both an attempt to suppress trauma and a bond that preserves their shared responsibility. Their reunion forces them to choose between loyalty, love and revenge.
