When Güllü rejects the arrangement, family pressure and violence intensify. After her attempt to escape with Kemal fails, Güllü goes to Muzaffer Bey’s farm. What's in this series?

Adapting two connected novels together

The 1990 TRT series is one of the adaptations that brings together Orhan Kemal’s novels Vukuat Var and Hanımın Çiftliği. Academic research notes that the two novels were considered together in adaptations because their settings, time frame and characters continue across both works.

Land, labour and class relations in Çukurova

The novel world underlying the series focuses on relations among villagers, agricultural and factory workers, and wealthy landowners in Çukurova. Güllü’s movement from factory work to farm ownership foregrounds class mobility, while family pressure, bride price and feudal power relations evoke the social order of the period.

The controversy around Kabak Hafız

The character Kabak Hafız prompted public discussion after the first episodes. Director Ünal Küpeli stated that the character was not meant to represent an actual religious official, but was a fictional television figure developed from the novel’s fraudulent religious type.

Filming in Adana and its surroundings

Filming took place in Adana, Osmaniye, Antakya and Istanbul between May and September 1989. A contemporary report stated that approximately 30 well-known actors took part and that İlknur Bozkurt, who came from modelling, played Güllü.
