Plot
Elveda Rumeli is set in 1896 around Pürsıçan, near Manastır in Ottoman Macedonia. Milkman Ramiz lives in poverty with his wife Fatma and their five daughters. Their family life is shaped by marriage plans, relationships across religious and communal boundaries, and political tensions in the town. Hatice marries tailor Hasan, Vahide falls in love with Mustafa, and Zarife’s relationship with the Macedonian teacher Aleksi confronts the religious and social limits of the period. Mustafa, who joined the Committee of Union and Progress while studying medicine in Istanbul, arrives in Pürsıçan as a fugitive and secretly fights armed bands under the name Kara Kalpaklı. The struggles involving the innovative district governor Dilaver, Abdül and Dimitri connect the family’s private concerns with the historical crisis of Ottoman rule in the Balkans.
