What's in this series?
The Istanbul neighborhood and social context
The series centers on a poor Istanbul neighborhood where solidarity and honor are emphasized. The neighborhood is the main setting in which the characters establish relations of reputation, power and belonging. This is better understood as a television representation of neighborhood and crime narratives than as a depiction of a specific real event.
Delikanlılık and representations of masculinity
According to an academic study, Tahir and later Kadir embody a form of delikanlılık based on courage, honesty, physical strength and loyalty. This representation is discussed within television narratives in which masculinity may also be constructed through violence, fearlessness and dominance in relations with women.
