What's in this series?
Death, reflection and social isolation
The series’ central conflict begins when Baki, who is constantly in contact with death, starts thinking about his own death. The question of who would wash his body after his death also exposes questions about the relationships he forms in life and whether anyone would remember him.
The ritual body-washing profession and funeral rites
A gassal is a person who washes the deceased as part of Islamic funeral practices. The series places washing, shrouding, prayers and funeral preparation at the centre of its story, making a profession that usually remains out of sight the subject of a fictional narrative.
The expansion of family responsibility in season two
The second season shifts Baki’s story from loneliness and the search for marriage toward responsibility for children. After Ahmet and Neslihan’s deaths, the children remain in Baki’s care, forcing him to weigh his profession against his wish to build a family and protect them.
Professional mentorship in season three
With the arrival of Kadir Hoca in the third season, ritual washing becomes more than Baki’s personal occupation; the transmission of professional knowledge and experience also becomes part of the story.
