Plot
Young Spanish-descended human-rights activist Rosa Sofia Martinez learns that a blow sustained during a Gaza protest in London has revealed a life-threatening weakness in a blood vessel in her brain. Soon afterward, she discovers that her father was Turkish and abandoned her mother before Rosa was born. She travels to Istanbul to find him and confront the past. There, she meets Ali Aydan again; they had first encountered each other at the protest. Their growing love is tested by Ali’s family obligations, the conflict between the Aydan and Karanoğlu families, Beliz Karanoğlu’s jealousy and Koray Karanoğlu’s obsessive interest in Rosa. When Rosa learns that her father has died, Koray uses a threat against Ali to force a marriage arrangement. The relationship therefore becomes entangled with family secrets, social and religious tensions, illness and danger.

Hümeyra’s past includes being expelled from school because of her headscarf during the 28 February period. This is a historical-social background element in the character’s story, not evidence that she represents a documented real person.
