What's in this series?
The Yeşilçam environment of the 1960s
The series uses 1960s Turkish cinema, shaped by intense production and the star system, as its dramatic backdrop. Semih’s struggle to make films is connected both to his personal ambitions and to the production and stardom structures of the period.
The industry, stardom and women characters
As also discussed by screenwriters Levent Cantek and Volkan Sümbül, the series makes women’s struggle for success and recognition in a male-dominated cinema world one of its central concerns.
Creative team and narrative approach
The series was written by Levent Cantek and Volkan Sümbül and directed by Çağan Irmak. According to the screenwriters, it uses the language and mainstream melodramatic forms of the period while maintaining a critical distance from the Yeşilçam tradition.
Reusing Yeşilçam codes
Academic analysis describes the series as reconstructing Yeşilçam’s familiar musical, visual and verbal codes while also questioning gender, exclusion and power relations within that tradition.
