The Misfits (Tutunamayanlar) is a Turkish comedy series broadcast on TRT 1, first aired in 2020. Tarık, a man who has never worked, falls in love with İrem during a job interview. After İrem loses her family’s wealth because of her father’s failing business, she moves to the neighborhood and starts working at a book café. Plot
Tarık has never worked and is not troubled by that fact. During a job interview, he meets İrem and falls in love with her. İrem has lost her wealth after her father’s business deteriorates. With nowhere else to go, she accepts Tarık’s invitation to move to his neighborhood and begins working at the neighborhood’s book café. İrem wants to succeed, establish her own business and regain the life she once had. Tarık believes that he must work and become successful in order to impress her. Guided by İlhan, a conservative and limited-minded muse with fantastical abilities, Tarık attempts a series of business ventures that generally end in failure. The other residents also struggle, in different ways, with work, livelihood, love and fitting into social life. The series develops its absurd-comedy situations around Tarık and İrem’s relationship, Lütfü’s effort to preserve his identity as a poet while earning a living, İlhan’s duties as a muse and the neighborhood’s everyday problems. TRT’s official archive lists 13 episodes for the main television run. During the COVID-19 period, production also continued in a separate online format titled “Tutunamayanlar Çevrimiçi.”

An online production format during COVID-19
After filming was suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the production continued through a method that allowed the actors to film from their homes with robot cameras. TRT described this process as a separate format titled “Tutunamayanlar Çevrimiçi.”
Absurd comedy and the neighborhood community
TRT’s promotional materials describe the series as an absurd comedy. The story combines Tarık and İrem’s relationship and their search for work, livelihood and success with the everyday problems of neighborhood residents. The motif of trying to hold on to life is turned into comedy through the characters’ different goals and failures.
İlhan and the fantastical narrative
İlhan is introduced as a fantastical muse who can take the characters into earlier historical periods. According to Zafer Algöz’s statement to TRT Haber, the character can take them to the Stone Age, Ancient Rome or the Ottoman period.
