What's in this series?
Connection to Sıfır Bir and narrative differences
Kıyma comes from the same creative environment as Sıfır Bir and is described in academic work as its continuation or derivative. Its plot does not retell Sıfır Bir, however. It follows three friends from Adana who try to establish a new life in Istanbul by opening a kebab shop.
Trying to survive in a metropolitan city
Director Kadri Beran Taşkın describes Kıyma as a story about people from a smaller city who seek an honest living while confronting the corrupted order of a large city. The crime narrative is therefore also connected to housing, work and the attempt to start over in Istanbul.
Production and release context
Kıyma was produced as a digital action and crime series for BluTV, with episodes running for roughly half an hour. It was directed by Kadri Beran Taşkın and features Salih İnci, İrfan Ballı, Cengizhan Yurdutek, Ömer Varol, Mustafa Yılmaz and Emrullah Sürmeli in prominent roles.
Street storytelling and the approach to realism
Street language, neighborhood life and the criminal underworld are central elements of the series. Taşkın says that his team tries to portray the world they have seen, but this does not establish that the series is based on specific real people or events.
